Joe Smith Why Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle Have Lasted So Long First itââ¬â¢s important to note that the two writings Iââ¬â¢m analyzing here are based on legends regarding early Dutch settlements in America. Itââ¬â¢s amazing how long these two tales have survived, considering that many other tales of the time have not. Is it perhaps because they stand out amongst all the other legends? Actually, I donââ¬â¢t find these two legends any different from all the other legends Iââ¬â¢ve read before. So then, what is it that sets these two legends apart? The answer to this question can be found in the style that they were told in. Anyone who has read these two texts will attest to the fact that they were both told in a style that changed all styles. To someone at the time of first publication, it was quite possible to mistake it and its finely detailed settings as near fact! This is because in both Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle, numerous layers of storytelling are presented, giving the subtle feeling that what the reader is experiencin g is more a truth than a legend, not mere fiction. These layers allow Irvingââ¬â¢s ideas, often disguised as being that of a persona's, to manifest into more of an authoritative writing, than the relating of a mere legend. 28 Serious Quotes From British Comedian Charlie Chaplin
28 Serious Quotes From British Comedian Charlie Chaplin Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) became a star well before movies had sound. But his talent to turn the tragedies of everyday people into epic comedies has made him immortal on the silver screen as he played everything from a tramp to a buffoon dictator. The following quotes consist of Chaplins observations on his life, career, and the study of human nature. Charlie Chaplin on Laughter and a Positive Outlook A day without laughter is a day wasted. To truly laugh, you must be able to take your pain, and play with it!Youll never find a rainbow if youre looking down.Failure is unimportant. It takes courage to make a fool of yourself. On Despair and Tragedy Despair is a narcotic. It lulls the mind into indifference.I always like walking in the rain, so no one can see me crying.Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.Nothing is permanent in this wicked world, not even our troubles. The saddest thing I can imagine is to get used to luxury. We might as well die as to go on living like this. Chaplins Comedy and Career All I need to make a comedy is a park, aà policeman, and a pretty girl.I dont believe that the public knows what it wants; this is the conclusion that I have drawn from my career.I went into the business for the money, and the art grew out of it. If people are disillusioned by that remark, I cant help it. Its the truth. The basic essential of a great actor is that he loves himself in acting.Imagination means nothing without doing. Why should poetry have to make sense? On Human Nature A mans true character comes out when hes drunk.I am at peace with God. My conflict is with Man.I am for people. I cant help it.We think too much and feel too little. What do you want a meaning for? Life is a desire, not a meaning. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each others happiness, not by each others misery. On Beauty and Understanding I do not have much patience with a thing of beauty that must be explained to be understood. If it does need additional interpretation by someone other than the creator, then I question whether it has fulfilled its purpose. On Politics I remain just one thing, and one thing only, and that is a clown. It places me on a far higher plane than any politician. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.Dictators free themselves, but they enslave the people.Id sooner be called a successful crook than a destitute monarch.

Predatory Crime Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Predatory Crime - Essay Example First, all the situations in which burglary or theft is raised by supplies, services or money. All the situations in which the individuals are motivated to become criminals. Secondly, all the circumstances which makes the use of crime ethical and legitimate to the individuals. Like unemployment, poverty etc. The third context refers to all those individuals who are now leading a successful life by transforming into thriving criminals and taking 'any form' of predatory crime as a profession. These expert thieves are sometimes affiliated with musclemen or organizers in a fourth context of rational crimes, the context in which crime becomes an economic enterprise fulfilling the demands of a market (Ferrington, 1991). It may seem odd, but it is true that majority of the offenders' contentment lies in the fact that their crimes are seen as a part of escalating crime. For any particular offender, a predatory crime might be more easily accomplished if the victim believes that the offender is one of the frightening new variety to which the media have been paying so much attention lately. An example of this phenomenon can be found in the Black Hand crime wave that terrorized residents of New York in the first few years of the 20th century. Black Hand extortion was successful because victims believed that their offenders were part of a large and powerful criminal conspiracy, which suggests that the victims were somehow related to psychological issues. This attitude of the victims encouraged Black Hand operations to expand in small groups or even sole operators; they used the threat of the powerful organization to accomplish their criminal ends. Thus, the snowball effect of newspaper coverage created a kind of momentum that made it much easier to be an extortionist. Unsceptically, victims are the most vocal claimants who claim of the crime. It is through the claims of the victims that attention is drawn to the dilemma of increasing crime and now people are tending more towards the measures and precautions necessary to control the consequences responsible to the advent of these crimes, atleast to some extent. Several victim advocates have become familiar figures in the American popular cultural landscape. John Walsh, for instance, the father of murdered child Adam Walsh, became an early spokesperson in the movement to protect missing and exploited children. Subsequently, he became the host of the very popular Fox television program America's Most Wanted and later host of his own daytime television talk show. Less visible, but perhaps not less influential is Candy Lightener, founder of MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving. In May 1980 her 13-year-old daughter was killed by a hit-and-run driver in a Sacramento suburb. It was later discovered that the intoxicated driver was on probation for a previous DUI ("driving under the influence") conviction and the leniency with which the driver was treated by the justice system prompted her to take action to

As a reoccurring theme, Puckââ¬â¢s use of magic creates humor, conflict and balance in the play. à à à à à The magic of Puck changes the head of Bottom into that of a donkey. Puckââ¬â¢s own use magic adds more humor to the already comical and over-confident character of Bottom. Puckââ¬â¢s magic also creates a great deal of humor in the dealings of Bottom and Titania. The contrasted humor is clearly shown as Titania weaves flowers into the hair of Bottomââ¬â¢s donkey like head. Titania is a beautiful and delicate creature, while Bottom is completely grotesque. Magic creates an unreal image of Bottom, which in turn creates a comical contrast between Bottom and Titania. As part of the already comical sub-plot, Bottomââ¬â¢s altering through magic adds even more humor to the overall play. à à à à à Next, the misuse of magic causes conflict among the four Athenian lovers. When Puck mistakenly applies the love potion to Lysanderââ¬â¢s eyelids. At this point, both male characters of the main plot have fallen in love with Helena, leaving Hermia out of balance. Why a Government is Necessary for a Country - 1120 Words
What is government? Government is a person or group of people who control and make decisions for a country. It has a number of particular roles to help make a country survive and function successfully. I believe that without the roles a government provides a country would not function and would eventually fail. Therefore, I think government is necessary because without it there would not be any provided protection, resources, and regulations. Protection is something that keeps a person or group of people safe from harm. A Government provides protection to help keep people in a country safe and secure from potential threats outside the country. For example, if a country did not have a government then anyone from outside the country couldâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I think that without the regulations a government provides everyone would be doing what they want causing the country to turn into chaos and eventually there would not be any people left living. My view on government and the protection, resources, and regulations it provides has a lot to do with my political typology. Political Typology is a name given for the combined views a person has on political issues. When I took the political typology test, I was assigned Main Street Republican, which is on the right or republican side of the political spectrum. It is also not as conservative or as far on the right side of the spectrum as the Stanch Conservatives. I do agree with many of the issues that Main Street Republicans believe in, however, I do not agree with one of the political issues. For example, according to a survey, 72% of Main Street Republicans believe that government is wasteful and inefficient (Beyond Red vs. Blue: The Political Typology). I, however, do not agree with the statement. I do believe that government is sometimes wasteful on some things however, I do not agree that government is inefficient. I strongly believe that government is necessary to create peace and order in a country. That is one of the main reasons why I sided on the having government is necessary side because without it I do not believe a country would last very long. Therefore, other than the view onShow MoreRelatedCommon Sense: An Influence on American Independence Essay1228 Words à |à 5 Pagesinfluence you?
